Shaban Ssenkubuge is reportedly leading in the fresh guild polls at Makerere University as results start filtering in.
Exit poll results from Nsibirwa hall, Nkuruma and Africa hall have put Senkubuge in the lead with 211, 263 and 99 votes respectively.
John Taylor has so far polled 73 votes in Nsibirwa hall, 63 votes in Nkuruma and 39 votes in Africa hall.
Shaban Ssenkubunge, a guild candidate petitioned the University Tribunal when he was disqualified from the race for electoral malpractice by the university Electoral Commission. He also disputed the cancellation of results from Nsibirwa, Nkrumah and Africa hall. The university tribunal investigated the matter and reinstated Ssenkubuge in the guild election. It also ordered that fresh elections be held in the three halls of residents. However, two of the guild candidates Grace Ruto and John Taylor secured a high court order stopping the elections. Early this week, Justice Yorukamu Bamwine upheld a decision by the Makerere University Election tribunal and ordered fresh elections in three halls. Justice Bamwine said the petitioner erred by suing the Makerere University Council instead of suing the University Electoral Commission, which was responsible for the polls.
