Rakai Nurse Re-arrested for Contempt of Court

Christine Nassiwa, a nursing assistant in Rakai town has been re-arrested for contempt of court.


Nassiwa who owns a private clinic at Lumbugu Trading center in Rakai was arrested in March this year and charged with drug theft.


She was accused of stealing and smuggling government Drugs worth more than 10 millions shillings.


Nassiwa was later released on Bail but ordered to return to court to file her defense. She however defied the court order leading to her arrest.


Rose Nabakooza, the Rakai district police commander, says Nassiwa was expected to re-appear in court two weeks ago to answer charges of stealing government drugs.


The DPC however says that her office learnt that Nassiwa had gone into hiding prompting a fresh search for her.


Nassiwa was re-arrested on Wednesday after staging a fierce resistance in Lumbugu trading center. She fought the policemen who had gone to arrest her prompting the DPC's intervention.


The DPC grabbed her and whisked her off to Rakai police station. She will soon be transferred to Masaka police station and fresh charges will be read to her.


Speaking to journalists shortly after her arrest, Nassiwa said she resisted arrested for fear of being tortured. She claims that she suffered hell under ruthless policemen during her earlier detention at police.
