Politics Divide Church in Kabale

Politics
The Catholic and Anglican Churches in Kabale are being accused of masterminding divisive politics based along religious lines.

In what is being seen as the battle for power, both the catholic and Anglican church are striving hard to field the strong and outstanding candidates to contest for the electoral posts.

This has come out as people declare their intentions to stand for the LC 5 seat.

So far five people are eyeing the post of district chairman. These are Patrick Besigye Kaihwa, Jack Katarishangwa, Fred Ruhakana, Denis Nzeirwe and the incumbent Silver Baguma.

But the contestants are not being looked at based on in their individual capabilities but rather on the religion they subscribe to.

Two of the contestants – Silver Baguma and Fred Ruhakana are Catholics while the rest are protestants.

In July the Anglican Church in Kabale convened a meeting during which it is alleged the church advised Rev.Canon Karishangwa and Denis Nzeirwe to stand down for Kaihwa.

But in a dramatic twist of events, Katarishangwa rejected the church decision and went on the local radio to announce his intent to vie for the seat.

Denis Nzeirwe, the Kamuganguzi LC3 Chairman, also made it clear that he was still in the race.

The Catholic Church on the other hand nominated Fred Ruhakana, to stand against Kaihwa. But the incumbent Silver Baguma has made it clear that he is still in the race.

George Tumwine, the Anglican Diocesan Secretary for Kigezi diocese, however says that the role of the church is not to divide, but rather to create harmonious relations between the people and the politicians.
