Lira NRM Leadership Stuck with Presidential Donation of 300 Heads of Cattle

Politics
The National Resistance Movement party leadership in Lira district is stuck with hundreds of heads of cattle that were donated by the president.
In April, President Yoweri Museveni pledged to donate cattle and ox ploughs to all the women groups in district.

On Wednesday, the president fulfilled his pledge by sending 132 heads of cattle and ox ploughs meant to be distributed to 44 women groups in Lira district.

However, a handover ceremony scheduled for Wednesday failed to attract the intended beneficiaries to the shock of the party leaders.

Caroline Adongo, the chairperson of the NRP women League in Lira says she believes the beneficiaries have been discouraged by members of the opposition. She however said he was hopeful that the women would turn up to collect the cattle.

She explained that the donation would benefit the women most of whom still use hand hoes to cultivate their gardens. A directive from the president says that each group would receive 2 oxen, a heifer and an ox plough.

Unverified claims suggest that some of the women have been discouraged by their husbands against receiving the cattle claiming they were for campaign purposes.

By Thursday afternoon, the heads of cattle were still herded at the mayor's garden awaiting for the beneficiaries to show up.
Adongo has meanwhile sent out several radio announcements pleading with the women group leaders, to show up and collect the animals adding that she was having trouble keeping the animals because of lack of space.

On Tuesday, the president delivered a similar donation in Apac district where a total of 200 oxen and ox-ploughs were handed over to 66 farmers' groups.
