Five boda boda motorists have been injured critically in an accident in Masaka town. The accident occurred this afternoon on Elgin Street next to Kiwumulo arcade.
The five boda boda motorists were part of the people waiting for the arrival of President Yoweri Museveni in Masaka town.
Rashid Kazibwe, a boda boda cyclist at Mayor's gardens boda boda stage says that accident occurred when the cyclists who had jammed the street to welcome the president knocked each other.
He explains that the cyclists collided and stumbled on each other as they were trying to clear the streets following the arrival of the president. Kazibwe says that the injured boda boda cyclists were wearing yellow T-shirts with words reading "Museveni Paka Last" and "Museveni thanks for ending park wrangles "among others.
Titus Byaruhanga, the Masaka district police commander says that the accident occurred about 200 meters away from where Museveni was greeting enthusiastic people who jammed the streets to see him.
Byaruhanga says that the identities of the injured have not yet been established because the accident just happened when the president was entering Masaka town. He explains that security operatives had to clear the way for Museveni.
He says that one of the cyclists identified only as Frank had his leg crushed into pieces.
Byaruhanga attributes the cause of the accident to reckless driving and overcrowdings of cars on the streets.
However, president Museveni, who was dressing a grey suit with a matching hut, did not notice the accident scene.
He was driven past the scene of the accident to Masaka Secondary school where he is meeting students from the district to launch school patriotic clubs.
