Soroti Chairman Blasts Municipal Engineer Over Shoddy Road Works

Feature
Paul Omer, the LC III chairperson of Eastern Division is accusing Yekosapati Ekukut, the Soroti Municipality engineer of conniving with contractors to misappropriate money meant for the rehabilitation of roads.

Last year, government under the Peace, Recovery and Development Programme [PRDP] allocated unspecified amount of money for road rehabilitation works in Soroti Municipality.

Shillings 74 million was allocated for the upgrade of Okurut close, Opiyai and Alanyu feeder roads to the standard of 7 meters wide and 150 meters deep but instead the contractor narrowed the road and only spread murram in spotted areas.

Alanyu road which is 365 meter long was allocated 21 million shilling, Okurut close was given 26 million shillings and Opiyai road was given 27 million shillings.

Now, Omer accuses Yekosapati Ekukut, the municipal engineer of conniving with the contractor to do shoddy work.

Omer said he has written several letters to the engineer reminding of his responsibility to monitor the road works in vain.

He claims that, Hands Company and Jesawe enterprise that were contracted to rehabilitate the roads belongs to Charles Elasu, Soroti District chairman.

Omer says he has also written to the office of the RDC and DISO who are directly responsible of monitoring PRDP funds.

But Ben Etonu, Soroti denies receiving any letter from Omer complaining about the shoddy works.

Yekosapati Ekukut has not yet responded to the accusation as he could not be reached on phone.
