Suleiman Wandera, a Local Defense Unit attached to Kachonga police post is in trouble for assaulting a suspect. Wandera is accused of beating up Paul Hirya, a businessman suspected of stealing batteries from a shop in Nabiganda trading center.
Wandera was picked up yesterday and detained at Butaleja Central Police Station. He is alleged to have assaulted Hirya last evening using a baton inflicting several injuries on him.
Wandera narrowly survived lynching when angry residents charged at him assaulting Hirya but he was rescued by police who arrived in time. Alex Olowo, the officer in charge of Butaleja Police Station says that Wandera will be charged with for assault.
He says that Hirya is still undergoing treatment at Busolwe main hospital with deep cuts. Olowo has cautioned police officers against using excessive force while arresting suspects.
