Human Technical Development training center, in Lira town has been closed and 71 students arrested, in connection with a strike at the school.
The strike at 7:00pm, on Thursday evening was sparked off by a group of students agitating against the poor food and the power blackout in their dormitories.
The students went on rampage destroying school property and accusing the school management of serving them stale maize meal popularly known as posho.
They also claimed that because of the persistent power blackouts, they were finding it extremely difficult to charge their mobile phone.
The strike almost turned violent, when the students decided to vandalize two vehicles prompting a police operation.
Led by Sergeant Alex Omwa, the acting officer in charge operation at Lira central police station, police shot live bullets in the air disperse the rioting students.
Bishop Tom Ibrahim Okello, the proprietor Human Technical Development Training Center, said he has been forced to close the school indefinitely. Some students have been sent home but not without their properties.
Henry Alyanga, the Lira central north police spokesman, said the arrested students would be charged with inciting violence and malicious damage.
He said the students are being held at Lira central police station.
