Two people were killed and 26 others injured in a motor accident that occurred in Rukungiri district on Thursday evening.
The dead have been identified as Lydia Kamondo of Kashayo village in Bugangari Sub County and Patrick Kibaraka Tirwakunda, of Rwerere village in Nyakagyeme Sub County.
The accident at Kazindiro in Bugangari in Rukungiri district occurred when a pick up truck carrying traders to Bikurungu weekly market in Bwambara Sub County, overturned killing two people and leaving several others injured.
The driver escaped unhurt and is still on the run.
Most of the people who witnessed the accident happen say that the vehicle was overloaded and close to 30 passengers sat on top of their merchandise. They explain that sacks filed with food crops injured most of the passengers.
Francis Bainemugisha, the traffic officer, blames the accident on over speeding, and overloading.
The traffic officer says that the police are hunting for the drier of the ill-fated truck. He says that drivers have defied a ban on carrying passengers on top of their goods.
