UMEME Impostors Arrested in Butaleja

News
Three men have been arrested in Butaleja for pausing as UMEME staff and disconnecting electricity from the homes.

The suspects are Badiru Kimbowa of Kazo central, Kawempe division in Kampala, Deo Mayamba also of Kazo central and Yususf Maluta, a resident of senior quarters, in Mbale district.
Diana Nandawula, the eastern region spokesperson, says the trio was arrested on November 12th, following a tip off from the residents.

The suspect's activities became suspicious after they started extorting money from the disconnected homes promising to issue receipts at later stage. At the timer of their arrest, the three had managed to extort 1.3 million shillings from their unsuspecting "clients".

Four people have so far filed extortion cases against the suspects.

The vehicle reg no UAE 473P, in which the three have been traveling in, was also impounded and taken to Butaleja police station.

Nandawula says police have found out that the three were merely employees of Mac, -a company that was contracted by UMEME to install new meters and read power estimates.

Police are also investigating four cases of extortion filed against the suspects.

They will appear in court shortly to answer charges of obtaining money by false pretence and impersonation.
