NRM supporters in Kyegegwa have disrupted the campaign rally of Kizza Besigye, the Inter Party Cooperation-IPC presidential candidate. Last evening, Besigye was scheduled to address a campaign rally at Kyegegwa trading center.
But minutes before his arrival to the campaign venue, NRM supporters carrying dry banana leaves stormed the venue and forced their way to the podium. The NRM supporters pushed away Victor Nyakato Rusoke, the IPC Bunyoro campaign chief who was waiting for Besigye's arrival.
The attackers also started tearing Besigye's campaign posters and replaced them with Museveni's poster. The NRM supporters then started singing no change and slogans in praise of NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Museveni.
Several policemen who were deployed to maintain law and order at the campaign venue looked on helplessly as the NRM supporters rampaged forcing organizers of the campaign rally to call it off. Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya, an FDC official who was on Besigye's campaign advance team condemned the attack by the NRM supporters.
Kamulegeya also criticized the police for looking on as the NRM supporters disrupted the campaign rally of his candidate. William Rusoke, Kyegegwa NRM chairperson said he was not aware of the incident but condemned the party supporters who attacked Besigye's rally.
He however, faulted Besigye's team for attempting to hold a campaign rally beyond the 6pm campaign deadline. He said it was advisable for Besigye and his team to hold their rallies with the specified time frame to avoid trouble.
