The high court in mbarara has this morning blocked the nomination of rosemary nyakikongoro the sheema district nrm woman mp flag-bearer. Also blocked is yokamu bategana katwiiremu's candidature.
Court presided over by Justice Andrew Bashaija found out that party primaries in which the two emerged victors were fraught with several irregularities.
Naome Kibaaju, a former defense ministry employee, dragged Nyakikongoro to court accusing her of election malpractice.
Kibaaju also accused Joel Mugisha, the district chief registrar and his team of guiding voters on who to vote for. Additionally, Kibaaju complained that Masheruka Girls Secondary School, Masheruka Modern and Bugarama Secondary School were stopped from voting.
Schools that were allegedly allowed to vote were Sacred Heart, Nyabwina and Pearl High School, all from Nyakikongoro's home area.
Kibaaju sought court's intervention to annul the election and order fresh elections. She also sought a 100 million shilling compensation for the damages.
During the hearing today, Justice Bashaija, ruled that the NRM electoral commission for the newly created district of Sheema led by Joel Mugisha conducted these elections poorly to the extent that there was ballot stuffing, no proper voters register among others faults.
The judge also questioned the competence of the NRM electoral commission in conducting a free and fair election.
He ruled that Nyakikongoro was wrongfully declared wined and annulled her election. He also ordered that the petitioner be paid 30 million shillings in damages.
He noted that NRM electoral commission and Joel Mugisha the district registrar should pay this money.
But Nyakikongoro said the judge was unfair in his judgment, claiming that the ruling was based on rumors and not facts.
She maintains that she is still the NRM party candidate until the party reverses its decision.
But Kibaju is happy that justice has been done.
Also blocked is Eng. Yorokamu Bategwa Katwiremu's nomination as flagbearer.
On Monday, Finance State Minister Ephraim Kamuntu lodged an application at the High Court in Mbarara seeking to block the nomination of Eng. Yorokamu Bategwa Katwiremu as the National Resistance Movement flag bearer for Sheema South MP seat.
Prof. Kamuntu, alleges the results were altered to favor his rival.
The judge annulled the Yorokamu's victory.
