There was drama at City Hall today when supporters of Singh Katongole, the NRM candidate for Lubaga North clashed with supporters Eddy Yahweh, the DP candidate for Kampala Central.
Trouble started when the supporters of both candidates who moving in opposite directions met a few meters from the nomination. None of the groups wanted to pave for another leading to a confrontation.
Supporters of the two candidates started jostling and overpowered the police officers who were deployed to maintain order at the nomination venue. Yawe's supporters accused the police of favour their NRM rivals.
Eddy Yawe, the DP candidate for Kampala Central alleges that he was briefly arrested by police and released because of pressure from his supporters. Yawe explains what happened during the scuffle.
//Cue in: I have been nominated....
Cue out... here.//
Ibin Ssenkumbi, Kampala Metropolitan police spokesman denies that there was any confrontation between Yawe and police. Another candidate, Sebuliba Mutumba, the incumbent Kawempe South MP also accuses police of barring his procession.
He accuses police of employing double standards. Sebuliba warns police against barring them during this campaign period to avoid bloodshed and bitter confrontation between supporters and police.
//Cue in: otherwise...
Cue out: .... it is double stands.//
Ibin Ssenkumbi admits that the police had an encounter with Sebuliba's convoy but says the police was only guiding them to avoid abuse of the rights of other road users. He says that police intervened to avoid the convoy from clashing with other candidates.
