Crime
The police in Kanungu have arrested eight people in connection with the killing of two suspected thieves.

The eight are alleged to have been part of a mob that lynched the two suspected in Kihembe village in Kanyantorogo sub-county last week.

The police have identified them as Francis Kazooba, the Local Council 1 chairman of the village, Benon Muheirwe, Hebert Akatuhurira and Paskari Kiwanuka.

Others are Edson Atukunda, Julius Nankunda, Alex Arinaitwe and Nathan Mugambagye.

The two men who were killed were found with bicycles and shop items the mob suspected could have been stolen from local shops.

The Kanungu District Police Commander Moses Ssemakula said they were found dead with their hands tied at the back and many deep machete cuts on their bodies.

Semakula said the police do not tolerate mob justice that is why they moved very fast to arrest the suspects based on leads on the ground. The DPC said mob justice in Kanungu district was on the rise and warned that the police would get tougher in order to curb the problem.

Those killed had not been claimed by anybody by press time. Unconfirmed reports suggest that one of them could actually be the arrested LC1 chairman's son-in-law.
