Three Senior UPDF Officers Suspended over Rape

Three senior army officers attached to the 13th Battalion in the 3rdDivision have been suspended for their alleged involvement in the rape of a 27-year-old girl.


The girl in question was raped on New Years eve, by 12 soldiers, currently under detention.


Maj James Kasule, the battalion Commander, Walter Olum, the intelligence officer, and Lt Sanyu Kaserebe, the Political Commissar are accused of covering up the crime and failing to report the matter to the authorities.


Brig Patrick Kankiriho, the Division Commander, says the 12 soldiers who were on night patrol found, Teddy Nakiru, drunk at Tapach trading center in Moroto and ganged raped her.


Passersby, who found her dumped and unconscious, rushed her to Moroto Hospital.



Captain Deo Akiki, the 3rd Division army spokesman says examination from the hospital confirmed she was ganged raped. Akiki says the three officers were suspended this afternoon to pave way for investigation into the case.


He says if found guilty, the 12 soldiers will be tried before the court martial that would sit at the site of the incident.
