Benson Kilara, an independent candidate for the Gulu Municipality mayoral seat has withdrawn from the contest.
Kilara announced his withdrawal from the race this morning and declared support for George Labeja, the National Resistance Movement Candidate.
His withdrawal from the race leaves six candidates in the Gulu Municipality mayoral race. Kilara explains that he now plans to engage in private business as he ponders whether join mainstream politics in 2016.
Mid 2010, Kilara contested the NRM primary election but lost and was nominated as independent. Kilara Benson has served Gulu Municipal council for two terms representing Pece prison parish in Laroo division on FDC ticket.
He served as secretary for finance from 2001 to 2006 and as the deputy Mayor from 2007 to 2010 before he was sacked by the Mayor Christopher Acire after crossing to NRM.
David Anyanzo, the Electoral Commission Registrar for Gulu has confirmed receiving Kilara's letter confirming his withdrawal from the race. He says although Kilara's name appears on the ballot paper it will be treated as an invalid ballot.
