The Chief Magistrates Court has extended a warrant of arrest for Gordians Ahaisibwe, an independent candidate for the Ibanda LC5 chair.
Ahaisibwe was expected to present himself to the court in Ibanda yesterday to answer to nine charges of forgery. It is alleged that he forged academic certificates and signatures to support his nomination in November.
Ahaisibwe was first expected to appear in court last week. When he failed to do so, an arrest warrant was issued to compel his attendance. The arrest warrant has now been extended and the candidate may face jail time if he fails to comply with court.
His lawyer, Enoch Twinamasiko, says it isn't necessary for Gordians Ahaisibwe to appear in court in person. He says he is ready to present his defense and has lined up three witnesses for the case.
In a phone interview from an undisclosed location, Ahaisibwe said he couldn't make it to court because he had other important commitments to attend to.
Ahaisibwe is contesting for the Ibanda LC5 chair against Melichiadis Kazwenge of the National Resistance Movement.
