Police in Fort Portal have arrested a woman for burning her 12-year-old nephew for the alleged theft of 1,000 shillings.
Jane Kisembo of Kabende in Karambi-Sub-County, Kabarole, reportedly attacked her son on Saturday when 1,000 shillings went missing from her handbag. The boy, whose name has been protected, says his aunt detained him in the house and using a fire-heated knife, burned his arms, neck and lips.
The boy was rescued by neighbors who heard his screams for help.
The officer in charge of Kacwamba police station, Richard Kapere, says that once in detention, Jane Kisembo confessed to the act. He claims that Kisembo said her nephew was a habitual liar and thief and she was tired of his bad behavior.
Kisembo has been transferred to Fort Portal police station to answer for her crimes.
The boy is admitted in Fort Portal Referral Hospital where he is receiving emergency treatment for his wounds.
Margaret Rwakiziba, the officer in charge of child protection in Fort Portal's South Division, says cases of this kind are unfortunately common. She says children are often caught in the middle of family wrangles that have little to do with them. She notes that child abuse cases are particularly high in polygamous families in Kabarole.
