A group of youth in Mbale, who recently defected from the Forum for Democratic Change to the National Resistance Movement, say a vehicle given to them by President Yoweri Museveni has disappeared.
It isn't clear under what circumstances the vehicle, a brand new Toyota double cabin pickup truck, was given to them.
Idi Ekaru, one of the 250 defectors, claims that the car was supposed to be used in the NRM campaigns. He says the pickup truck and 10 motorcycles were expected to arrive in Mbale yesterday.
Ekaru says he was surprised when only the motorcycles reached Mbale. He accuses Flavia Asiimwe, an NRM mobilizer, of taking the car for her personal use.
As dusk grew yesterday, the youth became increasingly agitated and threatened to demonstrate. Just before violence broke out, they were assured that the matter would be promptly investigated and they returned home.
Florence Kakaku, a senior NRM member in Mbale who handed over the motorcycles, says she is looking into the matter. She says that once the elections are over, the vehicle and motorcycles will be used to facilitate business projects among the youth.
