Rolland Mugume, has been declared winner of the Rukungiri Municipality parliamentary seat.
Mugume of the Forum for Democratic Change was declared winner this morning after he polled 6,516 votes beating the NRM party's Silver Ruhindi Kakurangwa who polled 3,862 votes.
Declaring the results, Agnes Nakalembe, the Rukungiri district Returning officer, said that Mugume polled close to 51 percent of the total votes cast ahead of the rival, who garnered only 30.06 votes.
Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, standing as an Independent came 3rd with 2,094 which represents 16.30%, while Rogers Mugarura and Osbert Murisa of UFA and independent trailed with 204 and 173 votes respectively.
Mugume, formerly an Aide if the FDC president Kiiza Besigye, was declared winner at 9:15 am from the Rukungiri council hall, sending his supporters into a wave of excitement.
In a brief victory speech, Mugume said his victory was a victory for the people. He pledged that he would serve both those who supported him and those who did not.
