Two employees of Continental Tobacco purchasing company have been sentenced to one year in jail, for stealing Nine million shillings from the company.
Edward Kasangaki, a storekeeper and Patrick Wamani, a casual worker, all residents in Hoima municipal council, were this morning found guilty of theft.
The hoima magistrates court presided over by the chief magistrate, Olive Mukwaya, heard that on September 16th 2010, the suspects broke into the company stores in Kiryatete Hoima town, and stole three tones of tobacco, worth nine millions.
The tobacco was later recovered. Three witnesses testified against the convicts and pinned them of theft and house breaking.
But the suspects denied the charges. They claimed that other thugs could have stolen the tobacco.
The chief magistrate however convicted the duo on two counts of house breaking and theft. She said prosecution had provided sufficient evidence pinning them to the theft.
Their punishment was however reduced to One year in jail each, after they asked for leniency and claimed to be the soul bread earners for their families.
