Religious sentiments have taken center stage in the Kabale District LC V elections.
The Catholic Church has thrown its weight behind Fred Ruhakana, an independent candidate to defeat Patrick Besigye Kaihwa, the NRM candidate because of his support for Hope Mwesigye in the just concluded parliamentary elections.
Father Geitano Batanyenda, the priest of Kashambya Parish recently mobilized clergy men to move house to house to ensure that Kaihwa loses.
Batanyenda and other leaders in Kabale want to ensure that all people who supported Mwesigye at all levels don't ascend to any political office in the district to end her legacy.
The priest has however declined to comment on the matter. Trouble between Mwesigye and the church started when she openly told Reverend Father Geitano Batanyenda to find a woman and marry.
This didn't go down with members of the catholic who viewed Mwesigye's remarks as an insult to the church.
Kaihwa is also facing stiff resistance from MPs Wilfred Nuwagaba, David Bahati, Henry Banyenzaki and Henry Musasizi. On Monday, the MPs launched a massive campaign against Kaihwa.
But Kaihwa insists that he is still on ground and will defeat his rival come tomorrow's elections.
He defends his decision to support Mwesigye says he did because it was required of him as a party candidate. Kaihwa says that it was going to be difficult for him to support Rona Ninsiima, an independent parliamentary candidate yet they were addressing joint rallies with Mwesigye.
He says he believes in the electorate other politicians who are fighting him. John Magezi an NRM supporter says it's too late for those fighting Kaihwa to change the minds of the people to vote Fred Ruhakana.
Magezi says that in spite of the fact Banyenzaki and his group claiming to be NRM they are doing a disservice to the party increasing the number of independents in the district leadership.
