20 Injured In Mbale-Tirinyi Road Accident

A motor accident along the Mbale Tirinyi road has left about 20 people seriously injured.


The accident on Tuesday evening occurred when the vehicle, Coaster Reg No UAN 349Z, in which the passengers were traveling lost control, rammed into a mobile water tank and swerved off the road and overturned several times at, Kasoli, Gadumire, approximately about 20km from Mbale town.


The driver died on the spot, while the scores injured were rushed to Mbale refferal hospital.


Martin Otim, Budaka district police commander, says the vehicle was overloaded and over speeding. The vehicle was carrying about 40 passengers, instead of the recommended 29 passengers.


Some eyewitnesses however say that prior to the accident, the driver was seen drinking a bottle of soda, and talking on the mobile phone. The Eyewitness believes that the driver could have lost concentration, resulting into an accident.


Traffic statistics from Budaka indicate that a total 103 accidents were registered in 2010, out of these 13 fatal accidents recorded, 41 were serious and 44 were minor. 18 persons were killed, 87 were seriously injured and 35 were slightly injured
