Josephine Kasya Retains Kanungu LC5 Seat

Election
Josephine Kasya has been elected to retain her post as the LC5 chairperson of Kanungu district.

Kasya victory was declared this morning after a hotly contested race against independent candidate Godfrey Karabenda Tumwebaze. She polled close to 30,400 votes, which represented 51% of the total number of votes cast.

Lawrence Mbonigaba, the Kanungu returning officer, says LC5 elections in the district were largely free and fair. He says only one major irregularity, at Kashororo Primary School polling station in Rugyeyo sub-county, was discovered.

At that polling station the presiding officer allegedly connived with non-registered voters to tick multiple ballot papers.

Mbonigaba says the Kashororo presiding agent issued 50 percent more ballot papers which were all ticked to alter the vote.

Josephine Kasya won in all sub-counties in Kinkizi West constituency apart from Kihihi Town Council. Karabenda swept the vote in Kinkizi East.

Kasya retains her seat as one of only a handful of female LC5 chairpersons in Uganda. She has served Kanungu as LC5 chairperson since the district was created.
