Indian Businessman loses Ushs 6.5m to Thugs

Police in Lira are investigating the circumstances under which an Asian National lost up to 6.5 million shillings to suspected thugs in Lira.


Keshu V.G, the managing director of V.G. Keshwala and sons, the sole distributors of Bidco products in Lira district was robbed of the money on Friday morning.


He told police that the suspected thugs broke into the shop, through a roof, and gained access to the money safe, which they opened using a master key and took off with the money.


Chemonges Ashraf Seiko, the district police commander, says that the theft was well coordinated and does not rule out the possibility of collusion between the staffs, security guards and the thugs.


On Saturday, two security guards attached to Star react and Securiko security firms were detained. Police have also launched an investigation into the activities of the staff workers, prior to the theft.


This is the latest in a series of robberies at Indian owned businesses in Lira district.


In January, security operatives from the Rapid Response Unit, arrested three staffs belonging to Uniliver, for allegedly conniving with the driver and a military police personnel attached to Makindye barracks in Kampala to rob the company of 7 millions shillings.
