Police in Ntwetwe town council, in Kyankwanzi district, have arrested a 25-year-old woman who allegedly killed her seven month old baby and lied to her husband about the death.
Nikuze Afusa, a resident of Namatokwa village Kitabona sub-county Kyankwanzi district, allegedly piled a heap of dry grass on the baby and then set it on fire killing the baby on the spot.
Afusa however told Benjamin Muchwezafura, her husband, that she lit the fire to prepare the garden for planting, but the fire aided by strong winds spread faster and caught the grass shelter where her baby lay, killing her instantly.
The husband says that she heard her wife sound an alarm in the garden and when he ran to find out what had happened, a dead baby welcomed him. He says that he decided to alert the police because he was not convinced about the story leading to his baby's death.
Mawadi Kadir, the village LC 1chairperson, says that the incident drew rage from the villagers who gathered in the garden and threatened to lynch the woman. The police who took her to Ntwetwe police station saved her.
Justus Mukabya, the Criminal investigations officer, says investigations into the suspected murder are underway.
The woman however maintains that her baby's death was not intentional rather it was an accident. She says that she tried hard to put off the fire in order to save her baby but in vain.
