Dr. Edward Ddumba, the Executive Director of Mulago Hospital, has been sacked.
Dr Ddumba was sacked over the weekend, after he was summoned to the Auditor General's office to explian the whereabouts of the funds which were intended for the supply of essential drugs for the treatment of special diseases such as diabetes, heart and cancer.
Sources from Mulago Hospital who accompanied Ddumba to the Auditor General's office, say he was quizzed for several hours on why the hospital did not have any records of delivery of drugs for cancer, diabetes and heart patients.
James Kakooza, the State Minister for Health for Primary Health Care, has this morning confirmed that his ministry had directed Dr. Ddumba to hand over office to his deputy with immediate effect. Kakooza said the sacking took effect on Friday last week.
At Mulago, the Public Relations Officer, Dan Kimosho, said Ddumba was not sacked as such but transferred to the Ministry of Health to oversee a project of the African Development Bank that is meant to construct divisional hospitals in Kawempe and another one in Makindye.
Kimosho said that the Acting Deputy Executive Director, Dr. B.B. Byarugaba was already acting as a replacement for Ddumba.
Dr. Ddumba has recently been battling several controversies including last year's disclosure of ghost workers at the national referral hospital, poor quality of medical service delivery, mismanagement of funds and outright cases of corruption, all going on under his watch.
Minister Kakooza said Ddumba has been fired for poor management, ghost workers and failure to supervise work at the hospital.
The minister said that he has personally and quietly been monitoring service delivery at the hospital. He said at one of his night visits to the hospital last year, he found a dead body that had been left for over four hours in a ward.
Kakkoza said that his ministry is going to carry out more investigations at the hospital to establish the amount of rot that has been going on there.
