Makindye West LC5 councilor elections cancelled because of the omission of one candidate's name.
Elections for the directly elected LC5 councilors in Makindye West Division, Kampala have been cancelled.
The elections were cancelled a few minutes to 9:00 o’clock after the name of one of the candidates was found missing on the ballot papers.
Ismael Tabalamule, a candidate for the Makindye West council seat, was stunned this morning when he found out that his name, picture and symbol were missing on the ballot paper. He brought the matter to the attention of the electoral supervisor for the division and provided proof that he was duly nominated for the seat in November last year.
With the confusion rising high, the supervisor, after consultation with the Electoral Commission headquarters, decided to call off the vote for directly elected councilors in the area.
The cancellation of this election has affected five candidates. They are Farouk Wahab of the Democratic Party, Isabirye Mathiya, Independent, Fred Kavuma of the Social Democrats party, Lubega Issa an independent and Elijah Owobusingye of the National Resistance Movement.
Samuel Walimbwa, a campaign agent for Ismael Tabalamule, says he is disappointed with the Electoral Commission. He says Tabalamule spent a fortune preparing for the polls after they were cancelled last month and cannot afford to wait any longer.
The Electoral Commission is not sure when fresh elections for the post will be held.
