Police in Mbale have threatened to arrest on sight Uganda People’s Congress-UPC leader Olara Otunu for allegedly inciting people to riot over the just concluded national elections.
Jacob Opolot, the Mbale District Police Commander, says police have deployed plain clothed security officials around major in hotels in Mbale, to look for the UPC leader.
Opolot claims that police have received intelligence reports that Otunu has been mobilizing people by proxy to demonstrate on the streets.
He however warns that the former UN ambassador risks arrest, if he sets foot in Mbale to personally mobilize people to demonstrate.
Police has for the last two days deployed heavily on the streets of Mbale to block an impending demonstration by UPC supporters.
The supporters had planned to match along the streets in Mbale Central Business District to vent their anger against the Electoral Commission for allegedly presiding over flawed elections.
But the police acted fast and blocked them from carrying out the planned demonstration.
An effort to get a comment from UPC leaders in Mbale has been futile as there’s no office for UPC party in the district.
