Matthias Kasamba, the re-elected MP for Kakuuto, may lose his seat in parliament if a new court petition querying his academic qualifications succeeds.
Kasamba’s rival in the elections, Deo Kizito Lukyamuzi, says the MP did not qualify for nomination because his secondary school certificates are forged. The suit filed in Masaka High Court says Kasamba presented documents baring different names and alleges that the MP has used those forged documents to attain higher positions for much of his life.
The rumors about Matthias Kasamba’s qualifications started way before the February 18th elections. However the MP rubbished them as an attempt to sully his campaign.
Deo Lukyamuzi is not ready to let the matter rest.
Lukyamuzi points out that the O-level certificate from St. Mary’s College Kisubi which Kasamba presented for nomination bears the name Matthias Kasamba. However the A-level certificate from Busoga College Mwiri is of Kasamba Matthias LS.
Lukyamuzi says the certificates belong to two different people.
In the same petition, Deo Lukyamuzi claims that the elections were fraught with voter bribing by Kasamba’s camp. He wants the election nullified and a fresh vote held.
The Masaka Deputy High Court Registrar, Harriet Nalukwago, has given Kasamba 10 days to file his defense.
