16 pupils of Kirimbi Primary School in Kyankwanzi District are at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital following a road accident on Wednesday night.
The accident occurred when the pupils were returning from an athletics meet at Ntunda Primary School in Kiboga.
Baker Ngobi, headmaster of Kirimbi Primary School, says the lorry in which the pupils were traveling overturned a few kilometers away from Ntunda. He says the accident was caused when the lorry driver failed to negotiate a tight corner.
Ngobi, who was on the lorry at the time, sustained minor injuries.
The Hoima Hospital administrator, Brian Kakuba, says most of the injured pupils were admitted for treatment to shock. He said they would be released by the end of the week. Only two pupils were in the emergency unit with serious injuries.
Dr. Moses Odongo who is treating the students, says one of them, Rose Namulondo may have suffered a spinal fracture. She will undergo further tests to assess her condition. He says the second seriously injured student, Aisha Kyakuhaire, should be released soon.
The lorry driver fled the scene shortly after the accident and is still on the run.
