Busoga Sugarcane Growers Plan pro-Gaddafi Demo in Jinja

Agriculture
About 10,000 sugarcane farmers in Busoga are planning a demonstration today in Jinja in support of embattled Libyan president Col Muammar Gaddafi.

The farmers under their umbrella organization Busoga Sugarcane Growers’ Association, also want to protest against the freezing of Libya’s assets in Uganda including Tropical Bank.

They have written to the Inspector General of Police to give them permission for the demonstration.

According to the letter written by the association chairman, David Ojwang Omboko, the farmers want to peacefully demonstrate from Kakira sugar factory up to the Tropical bank branch in Jinja town.

Omboko said Tropical bank has been helpful to their members by offering them bank overdrafts and low interest loans which have made many of them progress.

Faizal Muhammad, a member of the association, said the demonstration is to show solidaity with Gaddafi at his time of need.

By the time of filing this report the police had not yet given the demonstrators the go-ahead they needed.
