High court has summoned vice president Gilbert Bukenya over election malpractice.
High court has summoned vice president Gilbert Bukenya to appear over election malpractice.
It follows an application filed in High court by his rival Kasta Hussein Bukenya seeking the nullification of Busiro North parliamentary elections results.
Kasta Bukenya contested the Busiro North MP elections and lost to the vice president after polling 4955 votes against the VP’s 7382 votes.
In his petition to High court filed through Alaka and Company advocates, Kasta says that he is aggrieved by the Electoral Commission in declaring Bukenya as winner yet the elections were marred with illegal practices and electoral offences.
He accuses the VP of voter bribery, distribution of sugar, salt and soap to voters in Buwanika and Kamuli parishes.
Kasta also says that on 11th January during campaigns with intent to influence youth who were organized under Living Hope Organization, the VP allegedly gave donated to them shillings 300,000 while at his residence in Kakiri Sub County, Rwantama village.
This was witnessed by Kasta’s agent Edward Sempala who also got 45 thousand shillings. Kasta adds that on poling day at Naguru polling station in Buwanika, the VP stood within 100 meters while chanting the National Resistance Movement slogan to canvass for votes from voters who were lined up and those who were approaching the polling station.
Sempala said that on the election eve on the 17th of February from 10:00pm to the wee hours of the morning, VP Bukenya distributed soda’s, beers and cash from shillings 1000 to 2000 to voters asking them to vote NRM members only.
Kasta is also suing the EC for failing to conduct the elections in accordance with the law when it omitted his name on the ballot paper which infringed on his right. In the 2006 elections, his names also went missing having been nominated.
He wants court to order an election under the supervision of a different returning officer.
The Vice President has ten days within which he should file his defense.
