Five opposition Members accused of staging illegal protests against government have appeared in court this evening. They are Jack Sabiti, Abdu Katuntu, Peace Kansime, Busingye Phionah and Wafula Oguttu.
They were arrested this morning during their “Walk to Work campaign to protest rising food and fuel prices. The suspects appeared this afternoon before, Charles Serubuga, Nakawa chief magistrate where they were charged with disturbance of peace.
All the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, and were released on court bail Serubuga granted the suspects bail saying that they were all well known MPs and people with national responsibility, who he believes would not skip bail.
MPs, Christopher Kibazanga, Anita Among, Peter Omolo, Kasiano Wadri and Baguma Atenyi, an FDC member stood surety for the suspects.
Abed Nasser, the counsel for the accused has protested the arrest of Katuntu saying that he had gone to represent the other suspects but was arrested and charged.
Jackie Kyensimire told court that inquiries into the case are still ongoing. Serubuga adjourned the court to 11the May when their case will come up for mention.
