Unidentified rushed to Mulago after being shot by police in Walk to Work protests.
An unidentified woman has been rushed to Mulago hospital in critical condition after she was hit in the stomach by a stray bullet.
The incident occurred this morning in Kajansi, when police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd that was building outside Kajansi police station.
Trouble started when police picked up Erias Lukwago, the Kampala mayor from Wakaliga Veterans market and drove him to Kajjansi police station.
Minutes after supporters, Lukwago supporters started arriving at Kajjansi police station while singing songs in praise of the mayor elect and Buganda Kingdom.
As a result police fired tear gas and water canons to disperse Lukwago’s supporters and in the process hit the unidentified woman. Moses Kafeero, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commanders rebuked his men for firing teargas instead of using water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Our reporter who witnessed says that following the shooting Lukwago’s supporters also retaliated and started pelting the police officers with stones.
Earlier on, two other Members of parliament Issa Kikungwe and Betty Anywar were also arrested and detained at Kajjansi police station before being whisked off to Entebbe magistrate’s court.
The Mps are accused of participating in the Walk to Work Campaign. While being whisked off to Entebbe, Issa Kikungwe told URN that he is not bothered with the police harassment.
Kikungwe said that he will continue with the protest for the next one week. He also told URN that he will not seek court bond, bail or legal representation.
