Human Rights Center Demands Immediate Release of Besigye

Police
The Human Rights Center Uganda is demanding for the immediate release of the FDC party president, Kiiza Besigye.

Besigye was arrested this morning a few miles from his home in Kasangati. He is still being detained at Kasangati police station.

The human rights center however says that Besigye’s detention is illegal and he must be released.

Addressing Journalists in Kampala, Margareth Ssekagye, the executive director Human rights center, made it clear that Besigye has a right to walk because Ugandans have rights to movement, and expression.

On Saturday, president Museveni described the walk to work protests as idiotic and illegal. He said that if Besigye wants to walk, he could take a walk elsewhere.

A team from the United Nations Human rights commission is also in Kasangati trying to be allowed access to Besigye.

David Mukitale, the officer in charge of Kasangati police station, has told the UN team to wait till later.

Most of the people that had gathered close to the police station, including journalists and Besigye’s supporters have been pushed one mile away from the police station.

Meanwhile, tear gas is being fired in houses and several children have been rushed to hospital to be treated for suffocation.
