Midwife arrested for neglecting expectant mother
Rose Nabwire, a midwife at Kabera Health center III in Mitooma district has been arrested for alleged neglect of duties.
Nabwire’s troubles stem from an incident last week, in which she refused to assist a woman in labor deliver her baby.
22-year-old Monica Kyomuhendo, arrived at the Heath center on Tuesday morning, but was denied entry into the maternity ward. She told the expectant mother to stop bothering and disrupting her sleep.
Writhing in pain, Kyomuhendo stayed out in the cold in the hospital’s compound and managed to give birth to her first-born baby.
Jovita Tumuramye, who escorted Kyomuhendo to hospital, says her patient became so weak and needed medical attention. The matter was then brought to the attention of Shafiq Sekandi, the district police commander, who dispatched a car to evacuate the mother to Mitooma health center four where she is currently under going treatment.
The DPC also ordered for the arrest of the mid wife at Kabera Health center. The mid wife is currently being held at Mitooma police station.
TheApril 2009 Human Resource for Health Report states that Uganda has one midwife for every 5,000 mothers, while the World Health Organization recommends two midwives per mother in labor.
