Gulu District Local Government has approved the creation two new districts in its last full council meeting held on Wednesday.
The new districts are Aswa and Omoro. The Municipality has been given a green light for a city status.
Both of the new districts will have two counties each. Aswa district will have Aswa and Ajullu Counties while Omoro district will have Omoro and another, which name is yet to be determined.
Last year, the people of Omoro County petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to grant the county a district status,
The meeting also approved the extension of the boundary of Gulu Municipal Council by a radius of 8Km. The move it says is to allow the municipal to accommodate more dwellers needed for it to be granted a city status.
The council had to consider extending the municipal boundary in order to raise the required 500,000 people.
Ojara Martin Mapenduzi, the district Speaker says his council made significant progress towards development by accepting and approving the two new districts.
The creation of the new districts now awaits the final approval by the Ministry of Local Government and Parliament.
