The acting Chief Administrative Office of Mbale has threatened to sack local government officials in the district if they go ahead with a planned strike.
The local government officials recently announced that they would hold a strike to protest the delayed payment of their salaries. They complained that they have not been paid since December.
The Chief Administrative Officer, Joyce Namboso, warns that the strike will be an act of indiscipline and anyone who participates in it will be fired.
Namboso says salaries haven't been paid because the Ministry of Finance hasn't remitted enough money to cater for the district budget. She says the Mbale local government administration has been operating on a deficit budget since graduated tax was abolished.
