Justine Atukwasa, Nabweru chief magistrate has set June 15 as the date for hearing the case against Kiiza Besigye, the FDC president for staging an illegal assembly. Atukwasa announced the trial date this morning, when Besigye appeared before her court for the mention of his case.
Gladys Nanyanzi, the state prosecutor told court that prosecution will complete inquiries into the case by the end May. David Mpanga and Earnest Kalibala, the lawyers for Besigye consented to the date of the trial.
Speaking to journalists shortly after appearing in court, Besigye said that he was ready to proceed with the trial. The charges against Besigye stem from his role in the walk to work protests last month.
Besigye was arrested on April 18, 2011 from Kasangati while setting out to walk to work in protest against the high commodity and fuel prices. He was arraigned in court later in the day and granted bail.
