Community libraries that have been in ruins for several years are being revived by local communities in Kabarole
Communities in Kabarole district are renovating community libraries that have been in ruins.
For several years, the libraries have been left to waste, with no activity taking place.
Some of the community libraries that are being renovated are Harugongo community library which was established by Ruwenzori Diocese and Kamengo community library established by Toro Kingdom.
At Harugongo, the residents have painted the library, replaced the old leaking iron sheets, repaired the floor, furniture and replaced the old wooden door with a metallic one.
When Uganda Radio Network visited the library, a group of students from different schools were wiping dust off the books and computers. A sign post was also being erected at the entrance of the library.
Frank Mwesigwa says that residents got concerned about the state of the library and decided to contribute funds to renovate it. Mwesigwa says that residents provided iron sheets and bags of cement and also resources to renovate the library.

Cue out: “…look good.”//
Mwesigwa however says that they are still looking for funds to pay for installing electricity to the library, which was disconnected a year ago.
At Kamengo library, the library was established din 1950s by Toro Kingdom but has since been in ruins.
David Asiimwe, the librarian says that after the renovation, the library will be important to the community because they will access literature about the culture of the kingdom and also improve the reading culture.
Cue in: “as people of this community…”
Cue out: “…we need it back.”//
However Asiimwe says that the library faces problem of shortage of books.
He says that they have requested for children's reading materials, text books, magazines, newspapers and journals from the Uganda Community Libraries Association (UCLA) for more books.
Asiimwe also wants the Kabarole district education department to support the community libraries with books.
Faith Kobukama, a student at Kamengo Secondary School says that the revival of the community library will bring services near to the residents who want to access information.
