Hailstorm Leaves Trail of Destruction in Gulu

A heavy storm on Thursday night, swept through Ongako Sub County in Gulu district, leaving a trail of destruction.

The storm left more than 30 animals dead and brought fields of crops in five villages down. The villages are Tong Wiri, Bika, Tee Pobo, Onyona Dire, Oneko Gwok and Tee Pobo.  No deaths have been reported.
 
Okumu Charles Roko, the parish chief of Tee Pobo Village, says his village has been worst hit. He says some residents have been rendered hopeless with no food and shelter.
 
Opiyo Itenge, another parish chief of Bika Village says he saw 10 goats and 35 fowls dead. He appealed for farm implements and seeds to enable residents plant their fields.
 
Odong William Apecu, a father of seven lost four Acres of beans and Maize. He says his family has been surviving on thriving vegetables from the gardens and has only a little stock of beans left to feed his family for only two days.
 
Okumu Luru Emmanuel, Ongako LC3 Chairperson was found heading to the office of district disaster Management Committee, to seek relief for the affected families. Okumu says the extent of the damage is yet to be assessed by a team of experts from the disaster respond Unit of the district.
