UHRC Orders Government to Pay shillings 25 Million for death of Gunshot Victim

Court
Uganda Human Rights Commission has ordered government to pay shillings 25 million in compensation to the family of the late James Mugalu.
Uganda Human Rights Commission has ordered government to pay shillings 25 million in compensation to the family of the late James Mugalu. Mugalu was shot by security operatives on March 27, 2004 at Kerekerene in Budaka but died later at Mbale regional hospital where he was admitted.

His father, 70-year-old Wilson Kitunzi filed a complaint with Uganda Human Rights Commission demanding for damages and compensation for the death of his son. Yesterday, Fauzat Mariam Wangadya, the commissioner for Human Rights Commission ruled in favor of Kitunzi.

Wangadya said there was overwhelming evidence that Mugalu’s right to life was cut short by the shooting, which has perturbed his parents. She ordered government to pay shillings 25 million to Wilson Kitunzi as a compensation for the death of his son.

Wangadya said government is free to appeal the ruling in High Court if it is not satisfied with the UHRC ruling. Victoria Sekandi and Rashid Kibuuka, who represented government during the ruling didn’t comment on the matter.
