Uganda People’s Congress is split over the “Free Uganda Now Campaign”. It was launched early this month by opposition leaders including UPC’s Olara Otunnu, Norbert Mao of DP and Mike Mabikke of the Social Democratic Party.
UPC joined the campaign following resolutions passed by the National council and Central executive committee to work with other political parties against the ruling National Resistance Movement.
Majority of the members agreed that they would have to participate in any peaceful protests organized by other opposition political parties. Jimmy Akena, Lira Municipality MP says he gets lost with the many activities organized by the party which end up dying a natural death.
He cites the blue book that was launched by Otunnu during the elections, the national social movement, Campaign for Free and Fair elections and now Free Uganda Now campaign.
Akena says that he wants to work and build the party instead of involving himself in activities with other parties he does not even know.
//Cue in: I am 100% willing to…”
Cue out: …i will not participate.”//
Akena maintains that he has no knowledge of these activities that keep cropping up.
Currently the free Uganda now campaign activities are being led by the four party’s youth wings. The campaign coordinator Mabike says that they are organizing to mark President Yoweri Museveni’s 73rd birthday.
He says that the birthday is meant to remind the President that it should be his last term and oppose any plans to amend the constitution and change the age limit for the Presidency.
