Court Orders Fresh Elections of Mukono District Speaker

Local government
Mary Ikit, Mukono chief magistrate has nullified the election of Mubarak Ssekikubo Mubiru as the district council speaker.
Mary Ikit, Mukono chief magistrate has nullified the election of Mubarak Ssekikubo Mubiru as the district council speaker. It follows an application filed by James Kunobya, the former District Council speaker challenging the election of Mubiru.

Through his lawyer, Mungoma and company advocates Kunobya challenged the election of Mubiru as district council speaker for alleged impersonation. In his petition, Kunobya contends that the defendant was elected and gazetted as Nakisunga sub county district councilor under the names of Ssekikubo Rogers Mubiru.

He however says that on May 23, 2011 at Mpatta Sub County during his swearing in ceremony as speaker Ssekikubo changed his name to Ssekikubo Mubarak Mubiru. But in his defense through his lawyer Martin Musamali, Ssekikubo told court that he took on the Islamic name after converting to Islam.

But in her ruling, the chief magistrate said that she was not convinced with the explanation given by Mubiru. Ikit ruled that Mubiru’s oath was null and void because he did not satisfy the legal procedures of changing names.

She ordered for the re- election of Mukono district speaker and ordered Ssekikubo to take a fresh oath of office. Mubiru was elected after defeating James Kunobya, the former speaker and Godfrey Nsubuga.
