Namutumba district has been hit by severe malnutrition with at least 15 children below the age of 12 reported dead in the past one week.
James Kirya, the Namutumba District Health Officer says a team has been dispatched to the most affected sub counties of Nsinze and Maganda to find ways of helping the affected families. He says the two sub counties were three months ago hit by heavy rains which left many people homeless and without food. He suspects the deaths could have been a result of poor feeding or hygiene related problems.
Kirya says over 100 families have been affected with close to 180 children suffering from acute malnutrition. The most affected families, according to Kirya, can hardly afford a meal a day which heavily affects children.
Michael Saire, the Namutumba district chairman says the technical team has been sent but called on the district leaders to join hands and save their people from starvation.
Florence Mutyabule, the Namutumba district woman Member of Parliament has already called on government to send relief to the affected sub counties in order to save children from dying.
