A 20-year-old girl, believed to be mentally sick is rotting away at Mulago hospital in Kampala, after she developed a festering wound in the stomach. She developed the wound shortly after giving birth to twins, through a caesarian section.
Olivia Nagawa, was on June 24th picked from Central Police Station in Kampala, by Nakagiri Kyeyune, a mobilizer in the president’s office and taken to Mulago hospital where she is admitted. But she has since received no medical attention.
When Uganda Radio Network reporter visited the Hospital last week, the girl was found sleeping on the bed, with no treatment despite the punchy smell from the wound.
The public relations officer for Mulago, Dan Kimosho said that doctors had already visited her, seen her situation and were going to provide her with the treatment she needed.
Two weeks later, Nakagiri says the girl’s wounds have grown bigger and the rotten stomach is visible. All the URN reporter could see, were some antibiotics and painkillers including flagyl, Ampiclox and panadol, placed near the girl’s bed. The girl says that’s all she has been given.
A doctor at Mulago who asked not to be named said the girl’s condition requires a second operation, but said the operation cannot be carried out because she has no one to take responsibility of costs of the surgery.
The girl has no caretakers apart from a sister who steps in once in a while to deliver some food, which she hardly eats because of the pain in the stomach.
But even in pain, Nagawa can still afford a smile and a joke about her state of health. She says that she is getting better and is about to go home. She rarely asks for the whereabouts of her babies, who have reportedly been taken to her mother’s home in Ndeeba.
But the identity of the mother could not be verified because her known mobile phone number was not going through.
On Thursday however, Nakagiri told Uganda Radio Network, that one of the twins had fallen sick and was admitted at the Intensive Care Unit on Wednesday.
