Shock gripped residents of Katooma trading centre in Ibanda district on Sunday night after fire burnt to death three children of the same family.
The District Police Commander Ibanda, Richard Ecega, confirmed the incident and said they are investigating the cause of fire, which took place at around 9.00 pm.
The DPC said they suspect the fire could have originated from a burning candle left by the mother, who had locked the children in the house.
He said after receiving the information police rushed to the scene and put off the fire but unfortunately could not rescue the lives of the three children.
He has identified the dead children as five-year-old Ainembabazi Caroline, who died on her way to the Kagango hospital, Manuel Arinaitwe, 3 years and Immaculate Namatovu, who was one and a half years old.
Meanwhile, police survived the wrath of the angry residents who pelted it with stones as they tried to rescue the mother of the dead children, whom they accused of negligence.
Ecega says they wanted to lynch the mother but police rescued her and took her away.
