Soldier arrested for Robbery

Police in Fort Portal are holding a UPDF soldier on charges of armed robbery.

Gideon Abyongere, a UPDF soldier attached to 59th battalion in Hoima was arrested on Wednesday and detained at Fort Portal police station.

Abyongere  is jointly charged with two others for the alleged robbery incident in Kasusu trading center in South division  Fort Portal Municipality.

Bakari Muga Bashir, the Western region police spokesperson, says the soldier stormed Annet Kiiza’s shop in Kasusu and put her at gun point and demanded for money.

Bakari says the incident occurred on Tuesday night when the suspect together with other two robbed Kiiza of 1.3m shillings.

Bakari says that after the robbery, the soldier took off and was seen taking a taxi to Kasese, moved to   Kibiito town council in Bunyangabu County where he was later arrested.

Bakari, says preliminary investigations show the soldier has been a habitual thug in the mid western and western districts. He reveals that this is the third time Abyongere is netted in robbery activities.
