The United States government has reiterated its call for a free and independent judiciary in Uganda in order to foster democracy and justice.

Speaking on Wednesday at the celebrations to mark America’s belated 235th Independence anniversary in Mbale, the public affairs officer Jeniffer Harris said the United States called upon the government of Uganda to respect the independence of the judiciary.

Harris said an independent judiciary will ensure government is accountable to its citizens by respecting their fundamental human rights.

Harris noted that a strong opposition and an independent media are good for democracy to prevail in Uganda. She said the United States government is supporting the media in its efforts to ensure government is accountable by respecting the fundamental rights of its citizens.

The function was attended by a team of US volunteers working with non-governmental organizations and school children.

The American Independence day is marked every 4th of July since 1776 when the American nation was born.
